Conquer the west coast during your stay at the Hôtel Tamarin by Veranda Resorts. Surfing, unfamiliar landscapes, adrenaline-inducing activities, hikes, a round of golf… the region offers plenty to do and see. Here are our favorites:
1. Surf lessons
Cap Dal, the island’s hottest surf spot is only steps off the hotel’s beach, which has its own surf school. With a little help from our instructors you will be standing in no time, ready to catch your first wave. If you want to buy a wetsuit, sunscreen or a pair of shades, head over to the on-site Surf Shop.
The surf school also rents out SUPs (Stand-Up-Paddle). After an introductory course, you will want to cruise around Tamarin Bay. If you’re feeling up to it, steer toward the Rempart river where you may discover mangrove, fauna and flora from your paddle board.
Because Hôtel Tamarin is situated on the west coast of the island, at dusk, every day, you will witness some of the most dazzling sunsets – undoubtedly one of life’s simple pleasures! Be sure to have your camera ready to shoot the blazing skies while you sip a drink (sunset hour happens to be “apéro” hour.)
4. Casela World of Adventures
The gigantic adventure park has an aviary, a zoo of wild animals from Africa and thrilling outdoor activities. The MudKart or camel-back ride promise a good time whereas the walk with the majestic lions is a rather humbling experience.
5. Tamarina Golf Club
Golfers will delight in the stunning 18-hole, par 72 course designed by the architect Rodney Wright. The Tamarina Golf Club blends technique with dream décor and offers impressive views of Rempart mountain and Tamarin Bay.
6. Les Salines
Les Salines of Tamarin are part of the island heritage and offer a perfect setting for photo enthusiasts. The salt production is entrusted to women of the region who pass on this craftsmanship and ancestral practice since the past 200 years. A picturesque sight to appreciate in the early morning.
7. Cascavelle shopping mall
If you somehow grow tired of sunbathing, make a trip to the Cascavelle mall where boutiques and a market stand alongside cafés, restaurants, bars and even a go-karting track.
8. Dolphin watch
Book an outing to see the dolphins through the hotel. You will leave at sunrise to observe the spirited marine mammals, and depending on the formula chosen, the day trip can be extended to include lunch onboard the boat anchored near île aux Bénitiers (and a dip in the warm waters of course).
Book a dive through the hotel with experienced instructors who have explored every nook and cranny of these ethereal underwater gardens. Consider buying one of those plasticky cards that have the names (paired with a small sketches) of the Indian Ocean fish – you are bound to see quite a few of them (and maybe even a turtle).
In Chamarel the Curious Corner is worth a visit if you plan on checking out the 7 Coloured Earth – a strange geological formation – nearby. Stop by the Rhumerie de Chamarel – a rum distillery – to learn about the rum-making process and sample the different flavours. There is an on-site boutique (the amber coloured bottles make for pretty gifts) and a great restaurant.
11. Fun Adventure Mauritius
Hop in one of the little bright red sea karts and set off to explore Tamarin Bay, the Morne and Bénitiers island accompanied by a warm and welcoming team (you do steer your own miniature speed boat). This is an activity for the adrenaline junkies.
12. The “7 Cascades”
A guide will lead the way through endemic forests, jungle, guava bushes… The 7 Cascades (7 Waterfalls) trail is a lovely immersion in the local flora, far from the hotels and beaches. The hike requires some effort but it sure is worth it: the hike ends with a dip in the waterfalls’ ponds (the perfect way to cool off.)
Yanature offers fabulous hikes led by talented and knowledgeable guides so you can walk at your own pace and feel safe. We suggest hiking Le Morne – from its peak you can see the surrounding reef, lagoon and west coast.
14. The Martello Tower Museum
The short, fifteen-minute visit of the Martello Tower will teach you everything you want to know about how this tower came to be, its purpose and history. Keep you eyes open – it is hidden on a side street near the beach.
15. La Preneuse beach
The gorgeous beach looks onto Le Morne, the rugged mountain that looms over the coastline. Stroll along the beach, work on your tan or go snorkelling. La Preneuse beach is very different from Tamarin beach, even though they are not that far apart.
